Principles of Directed Infrared CountermeasuresCourse DescriptionThe Principles of Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) short course explores the way in which optical frequency (visible, infrared and ultraviolet) electromagnetic is used to detect and defeat legacy and advanced man portable air defense systems (MANPADS) and other infrared missile threats.Participants will learn about fundamental principles of the electromagnetic spectrum, blackbody physics, atmospheric and meteorological considerations as well as how to identify target and background signature characteristics. Course material examines the infrared threat, increased J/S requirements and the history, theory and design of infrared missile systems. Recent developments in laser-based closed-loop countermeasure systems are presented and analyzed. The importance of the ever-increasing J/S ratio is explored, including the evolution of missile defeat mechanisms. This advanced training program features an in-depth industry survey of modern DIRCM systems and programs. Emphasis is placed on understanding how operational requirements and environmental concerns drive the systems design, and how systems engineering trade-offs can affect DIRCM operational performance. An impressive video clip library enhances learning by illustrating DIRCM design, integration and test, operational performance and real world employment.
